Specialised engineering for complex mining challenges
For more than a decade, REC has established itself as a trusted partner for mining companies navigating complex tailings and water management challenges. The company’s expertise extends across tailings storage facility design and auditing, water security, waste management and geotechnical engineering solutions.
REC’s methodology centers on rigorous analysis and site-specific design. Each project begins with comprehensive questioning of existing assumptions, thorough data analysis and evaluation of previous approaches. This foundation enables the development of facilities engineered for long-term performance and reliability.
GDMS: Integrated dam and tailings management
Recognising the inefficiencies inherent in fragmented data management systems, REC developed GDMS — a comprehensive 3D modelling and software-as-a-service platform designed specifically for water infrastructure lifecycle management.
The platform consolidates previously disparate data sources into a centralised system, enabling real-time monitoring and decision-making. GDMS integrates structural monitoring, water balance tracking and compliance documentation within a single interface, addressing the comprehensive requirements of the Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management.
According to REC founder Mitch Hanger, mining companies previously required multiple software platforms and consultants to cover the full breadth of TSF management and monitoring, which increased costs and opportunity for error.
“GDMS eliminates the need for multiple telemetry and data management systems, streamlining TSF management within a single centralised platform.”
The platform’s integration of live field data with 3D modelling capabilities allows operators to monitor water movement in real-time and assess system-wide impacts of operational adjustments.
Project experience and partnerships
REC has established a comprehensive portfolio of engagements with leading industry participants, including ASX-listed companies operating across lithium, iron ore, energy, gold and mining services sectors both domestically and internationally.
REC maintains a seven-year relationship with an ASX-listed gold producer, providing comprehensive tailings infrastructure, water management and monitoring services. This ongoing partnership demonstrates the company’s capacity for sustained technical support across multiple operational phases.
The company was recently selected for the Azure Minerals TSF engineering project — a greenfield lithium development in the Pilbara — based on demonstrated design efficiencies and risk reduction strategies. REC has been appointed as designer with provisions to serve as Engineer of Record, reflecting the technical confidence placed in their expertise.
Technical approach
As a privately held specialist consultancy, REC provides direct access to senior engineering personnel and maintains operational flexibility that enables responsive project execution. The company’s experience spans Australia, Asia and Africa, with particular focus on technically challenging or high-risk projects.
REC’s approach emphasises first-principles analysis, comprehensive data interrogation, and site-specific solution development rather than template-based design methodologies. This results in engineered systems designed to perform effectively under actual site conditions over extended operational periods.
REC has built its reputation by tackling the projects others find too complex or risky. REC deconstructs every challenge from the ground up — interrogating assumptions, questioning the data and applying scientific principles. Its custom solutions are built to reflect real conditions, not templates, delivering assets that perform long term.
When standard approaches aren’t enough, that’s where REC thrives.
