Dig deep: Underground Operators Conference 2025

ausimm-

The Adelaide Convention Centre will play host to Australia’s premier underground mining conference, spanning three days from April 7-9.

With about one in three Australian mines operating underground, this is a significant sector of the total market and represents billions of dollars in turnover from a wide variety of minerals and metals — from gold in Kalgoorlie, to coal in the Hunter Valley and copper in South Australia.

Underground mining presents a unique set of challenges in order to operate safely and profitably in the current climate, which makes events like the Underground Operators Conference such an invaluable tool for both miners and mining equipment and service suppliers. It provides a forum for the sharing of ideas, the presentation of new technology and a think tank conducive to developing more cost-effective methods for ore extraction and also mining at greater depths.

The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (AusIMM) was founded in 1893 and operates under a royal charter.

They have a global community of members, branches, societies and influential partnerships with industry, government, education and the community.

AusIMM has become a trusted voice for professionals working in the resources sector — shaping careers, showcasing leadership, creating communities and upholding industry standards.

AusIMM was named 2024 Association of the Year for demonstrating its impact on the global resources sector through providing world-class professional development and connection for its members and resource professionals in general. This is a glowing endorsement of the quality and engagement of their conferences across the board.

AusIMM has a suite of these technical conferences each year, aimed at showcasing technology and innovation in mining at a global level and the Underground Operators Conference is one of the jewels in that crown.

This year they have three prominent keynote speakers: Vale Base Metals chairman Mark Cutifani; geologist and social performance professional and resolution88 director and principal Bruce Harvey and Adriatic Metals (ASX: ADT) chief executive and managing director Laura Tyler. Ms

Tyler will be covering ‘Mining the Future: the portals of discovery that take us there’. Mr Cutifani’s topic of discussion is ‘Underground Mining — the future of sustainable societies’ and Mr Harvey will address ‘Out from Underground: planning to produce — operational ESG for mine development and operations’. These talks represent three highly relevant and timely topics presented by experts in their fields.

In addition to the keynote speakers, there are over 34 technical topics to be presented on subjects including mine case studies, technology application, blasting, sustainability, innovation, raise boring, hydropower energy recovery, paste filling, health and safety, advances in operating practice underground and many more.

An interesting addition to the conference is the panel discussion, scheduled for the afternoon of April 8. Miner Ventures director Jo-Anne Dudley will act as the facilitator of the discussion, which is focused on safety in mine design.

Additional talking points will be added by KAAMA Consulting principal Mark Adams, BHP (ASX: BHP) strategic planning superintendent Anne-Marie Ebbels and Raising Australia general manager Dave Kilkenny.

Four networking functions also present opportunities to collaborate, create new business connections and discuss the concepts and ideas presented.

This year, the conference is sponsored by BHP, Caterpillar, Dyno Nobel, Epiroc, Orica (ASX: ORI), Sandvik, Barminco, Beck Engineering, Enaex Australia, Mining Plus, DSI Underground and Byrnecut.

The Australian Mining Review is a proud media partner of the Underground Operators Conference and copies of our hard copy newspaper will be available at the event. In addition, we will be publishing a feature on the conference, with a full overview of the main talking points, key innovations and highlights in our May edition.
