Powering the future of metallurgical coal

Powering the future of metallurgical _coal

One of Queensland’s premier metallurgical coal operations, Peabody Energy’s world-class Centurion Mine, is positioned in the Bowen Basin in Central Queensland and plays a critical role in supplying premium hard coking coal to global markets.

It’s a mine that reinforces the state’s status as a powerhouse in the mining sector.

A legacy reimagined

Centurion Mine is a fusion of history and modern innovation, comprising of the open-cut Eaglefield Mine and the underground operation formerly known as North Goonyella.

In 2022, Peabody Energy embarked on an ambitious redevelopment of the site, renaming North Goonyella to Centurion – a nod to the resilience, discipline and strength of the Roman Centurion.

This rebranding signified a renewed commitment to operational excellence and long-term sustainability.

A strategic vision

Peabody Energy’s investment in Centurion is testament to its confidence in the site’s potential, aiming to start longwall production next year in 2026 and capitalising on substantial existing infrastructure.

This includes a newly installed 300m longwall system, a state-of-the-art coal handling preparation plant and a dedicated rail loop connecting the mine to the Dalrymple Bay Coal Terminal. Supporting its workforce is also a top priority, with an upgraded accommodation village providing housing and amenities for more than 400 workers.

This investment and indeed this vision, not only enhances operational efficiency, but bolsters employment opportunities and regional economic growth for the state.

A milestone achievement

In December 2024, Peabody Energy announced the successful shipment of its first coal product from Centurion. The milestone underscored the company’s ability to transform the site into a globally competitive metallurgical coal operation.

The shipment represented the culmination of extensive planning, investment and redevelopment efforts over the past two years. By leveraging existing infrastructure and introducing cutting-edge mining technologies, Peabody has revitalised Centurion into a world-class operation.

The successful shipment also reaffirmed confidence in Qld’s metallurgical coal industry and its crucial role in the global steel supply chain.

With a projected mine life exceeding 25 years, Centurion is poised to remain a key asset in Peabody’s global portfolio for decades to come.

Sustainability & innovation

As part of its commitment to sustainable mining, Peabody is integrating innovative technologies to minimise environmental impact.

A landmark initiative at Centurion is the development of a?5MW power station, which will reduce emissions by repurposing waste gas from the coal seams, an initiative emphasises Peabody’s proactive approach to energy efficiency and responsible resource management.

Additionally, stringent environmental protocols, rehabilitation efforts and water management strategies are in place to ensure sustainable operations, so by leveraging best practices in environmental stewardship, Peabody is aligning with both regulatory requirements and community expectations.

A full collaboration

The success of Centurion is bolstered by the expertise of its contractors, suppliers and partners. Key players in construction, engineering and technology have been integral in driving efficiency and innovation at the site.

From state-of-the-art mining equipment suppliers to infrastructure developers, these partnerships have enabled Centurion to maintain best-in-class operational standards.

By fostering strong relationships with industry leaders, Peabody is ensuring that Centurion remains at the forefront of technological advancements and efficiency improvements.

The Road Ahead

With the longwall production set to start next year, Centurion is well on track to become a leading supplier of high-quality metallurgical coal. The mine’s premium hard coking coal is in high demand globally, particularly from steel manufacturers in Asia, positioning Centurion as a key contributor to Peabody’s strategy of shifting toward a metallurgical coal-focused portfolio.

In addition to Centurion’s expansion, Peabody’s acquisition of Anglo American’s Australian coal assets has further strengthened its position in the market. This strategic move enhances Peabody’s capacity to meet growing global demand while reinforcing its commitment to the Australian mining sector.

A pillar of the mining industry

Through strategic investment, cutting-edge technology and a steadfast commitment to sustainability, Peabody Energy is ensuring that Centurion remains a world-class operation for years to come.

With a strong workforce, sustainable initiatives and a clear growth trajectory, Centurion exemplifies the innovation and endurance that define Australia’s mining sector. Centurion is not just a mine. It’s a legacy in the making.
