NEW data has shown that those in the mining sector using GPS fleet management solutions are experiencing significantly better cost efficiencies than those who do not.
GPS systems improve driver safety, decrease fuel usage and allow for electronic management of maintenance schedules. Through the use of GPS systems, organisations can pinpoint inefficiencies within their fleet and enact changes that will not only allow them to save significantly on their bottom line, but also reduce their carbon footprint.
Market leader Navman Wireless recently released figures that showed how GPS fleet tracking solutions were increasing the level of transparency between vehicles and managers, providing ongoing records of drivers’ compliance with safety policies.
“Fleet managers are given the ability to not only identify at-risk driver behaviour such as speeding, harsh vehicle usage and non-compliance, but to take action in real time,” Navman Wireless Asia Pacific vice president Ian Daniel said.
“This helps to greatly reduce the risks associated with driver fatigue through electronic management of journeys, driving hours and rest breaks.”
New GPS fleet management systems incorporate alert features that are especially important for users within the mining industry, where drivers operate vehicles for long shifts in remote areas.
With the use of new technology, managers are afforded the ability to quickly alert emergency services in incident situations where every second counts, both on and off site.
“Monitoring vehicle history and current health to ensure they are well maintained is an easier process using a fleet management solution, allowing managers to set up automatic maintenance alerts and keep up-to-date records on what services have taken place, including dates and costs associated with each vehicle,” Mr Daniel said.
Navman Wireless’ reporting suite produces statistics on all areas of vehicle use in and around a mine site, including time spent on site, haul truck cycle times, light vehicle haul road separation and idle times. Managers can quickly and easily obtain information to better understand vehicle usage patterns and reduce fuel usage and wear-and-tear on vehicles and machinery, ceasing inappropriate vehicle use and re-deploying vehicles to areas of the mine where they will be better utilised to increase productivity.
Stationary plant and equipment can also be monitored for a greater understanding of their activities and run times, and to allow for fuel alerts as required.
