BHP explores battery electrification

BHP (ASX: BHP) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with battery electrification pioneers FinDreams Battery (FDB) and Contemporary Amperex Technology (CATL).
Recognising the need for innovative solutions to address the challenges of Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions, BHP is working closely with both companies to explore the application of existing and emerging technologies.
BHP and FDB will investigate powertrain battery solutions for heavy mining equipment with adjacent flash-charging infrastructure. The companies will also explore BYD commercial vehicles and light vehicles for use across BHP’s operations.
BHP and CATL will also explore battery development for mining equipment and charging infrastructure as well as energy storage solutions and battery recycling options for BHP’s sites.
BHP Group procurement officer Rashpal Bhatti says these strategic partnerships mark further progress in BHP’s work to reduce greenhouse gas emissions across the global resources sector.
“By joining forces with industry leaders [like BYD and CATL] we are seeking solutions to help shape a more productive and more sustainable resources industry of the future,” he said.
The partnerships will also focus on enhancing circular economy by advancing battery recycling processes and leveraging copper operations to establish more sustainable value chains within the mining sector.
BYD is a global leader in battery cell development and a rapidly growing name in electric light vehicle production. By partnering with BYD’s wholly owned subsidiary FDB, BHP aims to assess the relevance and development of these technologies for mining applications. BHP will also explore applications for BYD’s broader portfolio in energy storage and battery recycling.
FDB global commercial vehicle business unit general manager Jack Li says the MoU represents a pivotal milestone for accelerating decarbonisation across the global resources sector.
“Leveraging our unique expertise in mining electrification, I am confident this collaboration will drive transformative change, paving the way for a more sustainable future for all,” he said.
CATL is developing cutting-edge battery technologies and energy solutions to support the energy transition. The company’s innovation presents opportunities to accelerate the decarbonisation of the mining industry.
CATL overseas business head Tan Libin says together with forward-thinking resources companies like BHP, the company aims to demonstrate how advanced battery technologies can decarbonise mining operations.
“[This will] accelerate a more sustainable, efficient future while creating long-term value and transforming the global resources industry through innovation,” he said.
