Downer has announced a new scholarship for local students studying at the University of Newcastle in NSW aimed at enabling regional communities to thrive.

The Downer Empowering Women in STEM scholarship has been established to support female undergraduate students studying science, technology, engineering or mathematics.

The scholarship aims to:

  • Develop and attract the advanced skills that will be needed in the future technology-led energy and utilities sectors
  • Support regional female students financially while encouraging them to pursue a career in a STEM-related industry
  • Provide students with an opportunity to participate in professional development at Downer
  • Promote Downer’s support for education pathways and our commitment to working towards improving the social, environmental and economic well-being of the Hunter and NSW.

Downer Energy & Utilities business chief operating officer Luke Sullivan says the company is proud to invest in the next generation of female talent and changemakers in the Hunter.

“As a business deeply embedded in the Hunter for over 100 years, we have a strong pipeline of major projects that will require world-class STEM expertise,” he said.

“From engineers and data analysts to environmental scientists and planners — STEM careers are critical to building a low carbon future.

“I’m thrilled to be partnering with the University of Newcastle, one of Australia’s leading universities, in supporting gender diversity in STEM and enabling regional communities to thrive.”

Downer’s footprint in the Hunter includes major operations in Hexham, Cardiff and Teralba, delivering services across energy, transport, telecommunications and manufacturing.

As the Hunter evolves into a clean energy hub, Downer is actively partnering with industry and local education institutions to support a skilled, resilient workforce ready for the future.
