Komatsu Australia travels to Papua New Guinea

Komatsu Australia is now distributing to customers in the mining sector in Papua New Guinea.

Komatsu Australia has announced that it is now distributing to customers in Papua New Guinea. This follows Komatsu acquisition of existing distributor UMW Niugini Limited, now renamed Komatsu Niugini Limited (KNL), completed yesterday on the 1 May 2025.

Komatsu Australia managing director Sean Taylor says the acquisition resulted after a change in the ownership structure of the joint venture parties that previously owned UNM Niugini Limited.

“As a result of this change in structure, KNL has become a fully owned part of the Komatsu group,” he said.

“Komatsu Australia is the obvious choice to manage Komatsu Niugini going forward, given our proven expertise and success in the Oceania region.

“The KNL team will be able to draw on the resources of the broader Komatsu Australia business, especially our technical expertise and training capabilities to support machine troubleshooting and workforce development.

“We hope this acquisition will also benefit our Australian customers who have connections in Papua New Guinea as well.”

Komatsu products have been distributed throughout Papua New Guinea since its incorporation in 1970 and the company has become a leading supplier of construction and mining equipment, as well as power generation solutions, across the country.

Komatsu holds significant market share in the heavy equipment sector throughout the country, supporting more than 1,200 Komatsu machines.

“Our local Papua New Guinea customers can expect the same level of support they have always had from their trusted local experts, now supported by the wider Australian business,” said Mr Taylor.

“We look forward to welcoming the KNL team and building on the strong foundations already in place in the region, while leveraging our global expertise to create value together.”

Komatsu strives to create value through manufacturing and technology innovation to empower a sustainable future where people, businesses and the planet thrive together.
