Rio awards $167m contract to NRW

NRW Civil & Mining, a subsidiary of NRW Holdings (ASX: NWH), has been awarded a contract for works at Rio Tinto’s (ASX: RIO) Brockman Syncline 1 mine in the Pilbara region of WA.
Under the contract NRW will be responsible for the construction of earthworks, roadworks and drainage associated with the primary crusher, overland conveyor and non-process infrastructure at the site located within the Brockman mine hub. NRW will also be responsible for the construction of haul roads, access roads and concrete structures.
The scope of the works includes drill and blast as well as supply and construction of the mechanically stabilised earth run-of-mine wall, two precast concrete overpass tunnels and in-situ concrete foundations for the primary crusher.
The project is in close proximity to other NRW operations, including the Brockman 4 and Brockman 2 haul road contract and the recently completed Western Turner northern access road.
Rio has invested $2.74b to develop the Brockman Syncline 1 (BS1) project to extend the mine life of the Brockman operations. The BS1 project will have the capacity to process up to 34mtpa of iron ore, with first ore scheduled for 2027, and will sustain a workforce of more than 600 employees.
