Thiess is making good in the communities it operates in, with recent milestones in two major community initiatives.

As part of the 2024 16 Days of Activism against Gendered Violence campaign, Thiess’ information and communications technology (ICT) and health teams collaborated to donate 14 unused mobile phones to a Brisbane hospital.

Thiess health and wellbeing advisor Leigh Ruch will donate the phones to Logan Hospital social work department.

Currently, Ms Ruch works at the hospital part-time, as a nurse and midwife.

“I am so pleased that this simple and practical donation, for old phones that would have been previously discarded and no longer used by Thiess, will now support the many vulnerable communities and people across Australia,” Ms Ruch said.

These phones will provide emergency support to patients in a critical situation, where they may not be able to use, or access their own mobile phone.

Thiess chief information officer Johnny Serrano says donating mobile phones to domestic violence charities is more than just giving a device — it’s offering a lifeline, a voice and a pathway to safety for those in desperate need.

“It’s inspiring to know that something as simple as an unused phone can help someone rebuild their life and find hope again,” he said.

“Being part of a cause that transforms lives is fulfilling, and the ICT team is honoured to make even a small difference in such a powerful way.”

DV Safe Phone collect old phones that can be donated and pass them onto registered domestic violence (DV) organisations, law enforcement agencies and safe houses to victims of domestic and family violence (DFV) across Australia. These old phones help them with safety and escape planning.

Thiess renews NRLW Newcastle Knights sponsorship

Following a successful 2024 partnership between Thiess and the Newcastle Knights NRLW team, built on shared values of excellence, teamwork and community support, the company will continue as the top-back-of-jersey sponsor in 2025.

The women’s team had a successful season, making it to the semi-finals where they secured an impressive third place on the ladder.

Among the season’s highlights was the NSW Mining Voice for Mining Family Day in September, where miners, families and Newcastle Knights fans were united to celebrate the vital role played by both the mining industry and the Knights in the community.

Earlier this year, Thiess welcomed the NRLW Newcastle Knights players to the Mt Arthur South site for a special tour where they experienced firsthand the operations and innovations that drive Thiess forward.

Thiess Australia East operations director Scott McGeachie says the team had an outstanding season in 2024, and the company is pleased to be continuing its support through 2025.

“Thiess and the NRLW Newcastle Knights share a rich foundation of values, particularly in our mutual support for the Hunter Valley, a region rich in history and community spirit where we have proudly operated for over 80 years,” he said.

Newcastle Knights chief executive Philip Gardiner says the team’s partnership with Thiess reflects a strong alignment of values, including excellence, teamwork and a deep commitment to their community.

“The continuation of this partnership into 2025 demonstrates the shared pride we take in the success of our NRLW team and the positive impact we can create together,” he said.

“Thiess has been an outstanding partner, not just in their sponsorship but in their genuine support for our players and the broader Newcastle community.

“Their commitment to backing our NRLW side highlights their belief in the power of sport to inspire and connect.

“We are delighted to once again have their support for the 2025 season.”

The NRLW season kicks off in July 2025 with the introduction of two new teams to the competition.
