Powering a greener future

Globally diversified gold miner Gold Fields, who are the operator and manager of the Gruyere gold mine, has awarded a contract to Goldwind to design, manufacture and construct seven wind turbines for its St Ives gold mine, which is located about 80km south of Kalgoorlie in WA.  

Turbine power 

These turbines are expected to form a 42MW wind farm, which will be a central component of Gold Fields’ landmark $296m St Ives Renewable Energy project — a development set to become WA’s largest renewable energy initiative at an existing mine site. 

In addition to the wind farm, the project will include a 35MW solar farm that is already under construction in partnership with Pacific Energy, with completion targeted for the first half of 2026.  

Once operational, the entire renewable system is expected to supply about 73% of the St Ives site’s power needs and cut the mine’s carbon emissions by about 50% by the year 2030. 

Gold Fields principal specialist and project director Simon Schmid has said the St Ives project formed an important part of Gold Fields’ expanding decarbonisation efforts, which are underway across its 10 operating sites and projects globally, spanning Australia, South Africa, Ghana, Canada and South America. 

“We’re already benefitting from significant renewable energy generation across our Australian operations, including 16MW at Gruyere, 31MW at Granny Smith and 35MW at Agnew,” he said.  

“We are excited to see the project’s contribution to our broader global decarbonisation strategy, which contains a target of 30% net emission reduction by 2030, reinforcing our long-term and growing commitment to sustainability.” 

According to Gold Fields, Turbine manufacturing is currently underway, with the assets expected to arrive in the state this August 2025 before being transported to site for construction to begin the following month. 

Adding a unique community dimension to the St Ives renewables program, Gold Fields has partnered with creative consultancy FORM to work with local school students and emerging artists to create a series of artworks that will be featured on the turbines. 

Mr Schmid says the program fosters collaboration, creativity and connection and celebrates community by encouraging youth to share their interpretations of wind as an energy source and what it means to their communities.  

“Their artwork will be showcased across a lot of different applications, including on the turbines themselves, which will stand 130-metres high once constructed,” he said.  

William Ives, Goldwind’s sales and marketing general manager says the company is proud to build on its previous delivery of turbines to Gold Fields’ operations in WA. 

“Goldwind is pleased to deliver the wind farm component of the St Ives Mine project, the second renewable energy microgrid project in partnership with Gold Fields,” he said. “Building on our experience in delivering renewable energy solutions for mining operations in WA, this project further demonstrates how sustainable energy can be integrated into industrial sites to reduce emissions and support a cleaner energy future.” 

Recognised in award nomination 

Further to the successful developments at St Ives gold mine, Gold Fields was recently shortlisted as a finalist in the Decarbonising Mining Awards in the category of Excellence in Decarbonisation Strategy and Implementation by a Mining Company.  

The company is one of four finalists in this particular category, which recognises high achievement and leadership in reducing carbon emissions – specifically, a commitment to an ambitious reduction target and implementation of projects to meet that target.  

Gold Fields’ investment in decarbonisation across its Australian operations has been significant and is having real impact on reducing emissions. Existing renewable energy infrastructure commissioned since 2019 already supplies 82MW of power collectively across GFI’s Granny Smith, Agnew and Gruyere operations through a combination of solar, wind and BESS.  

Switching on the 77MW wind/solar St Ives renewables project will help accelerate total renewable electricity consumption across Gold Fields’ global business to 25%, almost double that of 2022. 

In addition to the shortlist, Gold Fields Global Energy Lead James Koerting, one of the mining sector’s preeminent minds in renewable and transition energy, has been nominated and is a finalist in the Mining Decarbonisation Champion category of the same awards, which are being presented in Perth next month.
