HIGHLUX Smart Solar Lighting

The Miner’s Choice

As the use of solar lighting becomes increasingly ubiquitous across mine sites in Australia, one company has been at the forefront of innovation for over a decade and boasts award winning Australian-made products that are uniquely suited to Australian mining environments.

Highlux and its suite of smart solar lighting products has for years been illuminating mine sites across the country providing industry giants such as Fortescue Metals, Rio Tinto and BHP with industrial grade solar bollards, overhead solar lighting systems and stand-alone off grid power sources.

Highlux director Tristan Downs spent years working at mine sites in the Pilbara and created the company in 2012 with a laser focus on the unique requirements of miners and the conditions its products need to be operating in.

“It is hard to fully appreciate the mining environment without experiencing it, and one of my key observations was that the right lighting is crucial for safety, efficiency and productivity, and out here, solar is a no-brainer,” Mr. Downs told The Australian Mining Review.

Understanding the mining sector’s priorities — safety, short lead times and site compatibility — Highlux rigorously tests and refines its solar products in real conditions and in real time.

When performance gaps arise, its in-house design and local manufacturing allow for rapid improvements and customisable solutions.

Today, its turn-key products are built to withstand the demands of the sector — from mine camps, car parks and truck bays to roadways and muster points. The company has grown to be able to meet the full range of lighting needs on mine sites and camps with a range of well-designed, locally made, tough and incredibly simple products — all powered by the sun.

The company’s most popular product is its Australian-made solar bollard which is widely used in mine camps for compliant pathway lighting, remote markers and walking tracks.

Each bollard features a high-grade polycarbonate head which is able to withstand extreme sun exposure; a curved top to prevent debris buildup and birds perching, marine grade anodised aluminium pole for superior durability and a full sealed (IP68) head which keeps the electronics protected from dust, bugs and condensation.

It’s overhead lighting system SOLVANOVA is also popular and its fully stand-alone off-grid power source SOLAENGINE is a must have at remote mine sites.

Because miners require long-term solutions able to grow with their evolving needs, Highlux designs its solar lighting systems with futureproofing as a priority. This means internal parts (e.g., batteries, controllers) and other components (e.g., luminaires) can be swapped out or upgraded without changing the external design or requiring full asset replacement — ensuring continuity in appearance while delivering superior performance.

When mines need additional units later, Highlux ensures the new lights match the existing design, but with enhanced technology.
