Suspended loads always present an inherent danger, particularly through unplanned moves. However, by removing and replacing suspended loads via remote control operation, maintenance personnel are removed from high risk areas and the potential for injury from those loads.
Using a Tracked Elevating Device (TED) and its range of attachments from Nivek Industries can not only improve the safety of maintenance crews working on a vast array of heavy equipment but also increase productivity during each shift.
TED was developed and built in conjunction with Australian mine staff to deliver the operational and safety functions they demand. TED’s initial role was the remote removal and replacement of belly plates, which it handles with ease due to its precise tracked drive, 800kg load rating and complete remote operation that ensures all staff are out of harm’s way at all times.
More recently, the LA-40 arm was developed. This revolutionary arm attaches to the front of TED and, through the use of specific halos or gimbles, can hold and support rattle guns and other heavy tools weighing up to 40kg each. This extendable “third arm” can hold and position a tool, taking the weight off the operator and significantly reducing fatigue during a shift.
TED is now making an impact in tyre bays too, with the arrival of the LA-Stand. Reaching up to 3m off the ground, the LA-Stand allows the LA-40 arm and its attached tooling to reach rim and suspension bolts with ease – again reducing operator fatigue while also removing the risk of crushing hands and fingers.
Whether operating in isolation or in symphony, these three tools from Nivek deliver some of the safest and most efficient maintenance solutions in the mining arena. They were designed to protect a company’s greatest asset – its people.
Such is the positive impact of Nivek’s products, that BHP is now training its fitters at their own Future Fit Academy to use TED and the LA-40 arm as industry best practice.
Many mining companies have already realized that utilising TED and its suite of attachments (including a jib, track roller carrier, the Rhino axle stand locating tool and a steer cylinder cradle, sump tray, steer idler attachment, pivot tables and several cutting edge and GET location tools) keeps their fitters fitter for longer by removing some of the physical strain on their bodies. This allows experienced personnel to stay on site longer and allows both the company and other employees to benefit from those years of experience.
