Securing the global green energy futureAusIMM

As the world progresses towards the global energy transition, the demand for critical minerals continues to grow. Combined with the pressure for increased supply chain diversification, critical minerals are one of the hottest topics in the resources sector.

Returning to Perth, WA for its third year, the Critical Minerals Conference (CMC) 2025 will deliver unparalleled insight into the rapidly evolving global critical minerals industry.

Taking place at the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre from September 2-4, CMC will address the challenge faced by every corner of the resources sector because of this shift — how does the industry rise to meet demand?

The CMC is the fastest-growing event in AusIMM’s successful portfolio. With two highly successful Critical Minerals Conferences in the rear-view mirror, it’s clear the critical minerals movement is gaining momentum worldwide.

This year, the conversation will go to new places, illuminate new opportunities and take the industry one step closer to the collective goal of net zero emissions.

Covering an extensive scope, the event’s themes will explore subjects including mineral economics, geopolitics, the global supply chain, circularity, ESG, discovery and development, new technologies and processing manufacturing.

With high-quality abstracts received from 85 organisations and 14 nations from across the globe, CMC will explore the topic of critical minerals in a comprehensive global context.

Delegates will gain key insight from featured keynote speakers from across the critical minerals supply chain, including WA Minerals Research Institute (MRIWA) chief executive Nicole Roocke, Geoscience Australia chief executive Melissa Harris, The University of Queensland Sustainable Minerals Institute (SMI) adjunct professor Ian Satchwell and Vulcan Energy (ASX: VUL) founder and chief executive Dr Francis Wedin.

Leaders from across the industry will come together to exchange ideas on four topics critical to the resource sector in candid conversation. The Setting a pathway: R&D priorities for the critical minerals sector panel will discuss the commercial, trade and technical realities of moving down the value chain in Australia and the role of well-targeted research and development in tapping Australia’s competitive niche.

The discussion will be led by CSIRO chief research scientist Dr Chris Vernon and Australian Strategic Minerals (ASX: ASM) chief executive Rowena Smith.

Attendees also have the opportunity to enhance their conference experience and gain additional professional development (PD) hours by attending a critical minerals focused workshop.

The Key knowledge of vanadium ore processing workshop, led by METS Engineering principal consulting engineer Damian Connelly, is designed to cover the demands and uses of vanadium. The program will allow participants to improve their knowledge of the broader aspects of vanadium ore processing, processing vanadium ore, the geology, environmental and best practices in mining and case studies of current vanadium projects.

Presented by Minviro, the interactive workshop Introduction to life cycle assessment will show participants how a life cycle assessment (LCA) can shape smarter, more sustainable decisions. The workshop will be split into two parts — a theory-based foundations first part and a hands-on build your own LCA section.

Focusing on specific knowledge of rare earths processing, the Rare earth elements workshop will explore a wide range of aspects regarding rare earths. This includes the uses of these elements through the methods of mining, separating, converting, refining and purification.

CMC will also provide opportunities for collaboration and networking between industry experts, including tea breaks and scheduled lunches in the exhibition hall as well as several additional social functions. Delegates can engage with professionals and peers, fostering discussions highlighting new opportunities and strategies for sustainable resource development.
