SPM launches a new era in process optimisation
For more than five decades, SPM Instrument has been a global leader in industrial condition monitoring, delivering advanced tools to keep machines running efficiently and reliably. Now, SPM is taking a bold step forward by introducing Process Optimisation as a powerful complement to condition monitoring — applying their proven HD Technologies not just to detect faults, but to enhance production performance at its core.
Traditionally, vibration and shock pulse analysis have been used to diagnose and prevent equipment failures. Today, the same high-resolution data and algorithms are being used to identify process-related inefficiencies before they affect production. By recognising signal patterns originating from the process itself, SPM’s next-generation solutions allow operators to optimise throughput, reduce energy consumption and extend equipment lifespan across critical machinery.
This innovation begins with some of the most operationally demanding and vital equipment in industry:
In tumbling mills, monitoring the toe position of the charge is key to optimising grinding performance. SPM’s solution delivers high-resolution, real-time toe position data, helping operators run closer to maximum capacity without risking overload or underload. Improved control of the toe position leads to better particle size distribution, extended liner life and reduced blockages.
For vibrating screens, process optimisation means maintaining efficiency and avoiding costly downtime. The system identifies signs of plugging, mechanical stress or excessive energy use early, ensuring smooth operation and reducing unnecessary wear.
In centrifugal pumps, the ability to monitor performance relative to flow or RPM enables real-time assessment of operation against the best efficiency point (BEP). Given that pumps consume around 10% of global energy, running closer to BEP can dramatically cut energy use, reduce mechanical strain and improve reliability.
Even wood chippers — a vital component in pulp and paper mills — benefit from this innovation. By monitoring knife wear and chip thickness consistency, the solution ensures optimal chip quality, reducing process delays and saving on maintenance costs.
The apt Group director Geoff Soper says that with this launch comes a new era.
“One where the line between condition monitoring and process performance is no longer distinct but deeply interconnected,” he said.
“SPM’s expansion into process optimisation signifies a major shift in the way industries can use data — not just to predict failures, but to drive smarter, more efficient production.”
