Access meteorological support for tropical cyclone season

DTN

Access advanced weather solutions for tropical cyclone season

We have long supported the mining industry with proven weather and environmental decision-support solutions for over 40a0 mines worldwide. Our recent name change to DTN APAC reflects our broader capabilities, supporting global businesses and aligning seamlessly with our parent company, DTN.

And speaking of change, it’s that time again – when Australia’s north braces for impact. Tropical cyclone (TC) season runs between November 1st and April 30th in Australia, creating heightened risk for mine sites across WA, the Northern Territory and QLD. Groote Eylandt in the Northern Territory was affected by TC Megan this year as the system moved through the Gulf of Carpentaria on March 16th. The cyclone brought a phenomenal 680.04mm of rain in just two days (over half of the annual mean average for Groote Eylandt) and peak wind speeds of 165kph. It caused hundreds of millions of dollars’ worth of damage to one major mine site crippling port infrastructure and a bulk carrier loaded with over 41,000 tonnes of ore. The company projected a year of stalled production and export.

There is no avoiding a large system barrelling towards your mine-site. There is, however, detailed preparation that can be achieved with industry-focused meteorological support.

Access Tailored TC Services

Our 7-Day Tropical Cyclone Service works to give you greater lead time to prepare for active systems. Your real-time situational awareness and decision-making are supported throughout the life cycle of the TC. When a cyclone travels within 600 nautical miles of your site, your operation centres receive advice and alerts by phone, email and interface. This supports seamless communication of vital information. If a cyclone is forecast to impact your mine, our meteorologists prepare risk assessments (RA) that take your operational requirements, site and infrastructure into account. These RAs can underpin your mitigation response, informing critical decision-making regarding the safety of your personnel, logistics, evacuations, pre[1]emptive delivery of supplies, and site preparation. We are on call for you, 24/7, so you have precise situational awareness and steadfast support.

Level up With a Risk Communicator

When your operations are sensitive to any kind of severe weather, DTN provides meteorologists who are expert Risk Communicators. Combining their communication capabilities with an in depth understanding of the weather challenges specific to mining, they identify where your operations are vulnerable to weather risk and aid your navigation of adverse weather events.

You’re supported to conduct a thorough assessment of your weather and environmental monitoring, and forecasting requirements. With a complete weather risk analysis, you are then guided to make proactive improvements utilising our mining-focused insight and advanced solutions to monitor and alert you to impactful weather 24/7/365.

Refine your Trigger Action Response Plans, weather emergency procedures and communication structures utilising our Risk Communicators’ knowledge. As these critical elements are upgraded, your reaction to severe conditions can evolve, mitigating production loss where possible and enhancing safety outcomes. Opt-in for on[1]demand or regular weather risk briefings, tailored to your operations. The briefings deliver accurate information about potential impacts enabling thorough preparation and assured critical decision making.

We can also prepare Post-Storm Reports (PSR), analysing the timeline and operational response to severe weather events. The PSR allows you to pinpoint any procedures and monitoring that need improvement and provides meteorological detail to support insurance claims.

Monitor On-Site Flood Risk

Flooding from severe weather systems amplifies threats to safety, infrastructure and environmental integrity, and supply chain efficiency. In 2022 alone, it’s estimated Australia’s largest coal companies sustained sales losses of $5 billion, due to flooding and severe weather.

Deploying a solution that monitors on-site flood risk allows operators to identify which catchments are at risk, minute to minute, buying time to rapidly enact mitigation procedures.

Our Flood Risk System (FRS) monitors real-time precipitation. To enhance your situational awareness, it alerts for flood risk at any number of geo-fenced catchments across your site and network. Hundreds of virtual ‘weather stations’ for each chosen catchment enable precise determination of both rainfall intensity and accumulation.

If your geofenced catchments have the potential to exceed your pre-set 24-hour accumulation thresholds, yellow and red alerts are triggered. The FRS issues alerts via SMS, email, and the Weatherguard app, giving you and your team targeted visibility to guide your mitigationresponse. Gain a complete picture, and our capacity to monitor your site 24/7, no matter how remote.

Prepare Now

Unusually warm Sea Surface Temperatures are sur[1]rounding Australia, which is likely to increase the proportion of severe tropical cyclones that we see in Australia. Don’t face another season with weather services that aren’t tailored to your site and operations. DTN are here before, during and after weather events, to provide expert guidance – supporting your operations with actionable insights.
