The Metal Specialists

The metal specialists

A.D. Coote & Co has been shaping the world with expert metalwork since 1968. The company has built a reputation as a trusted supplier of the mining industry — showcased by its long-standing track record of providing durable and precision engineered products.

Operating from a fully equipped workshop and factory in Welshpool in WA, A.D. Coote & Co provides comprehensive services from fabrication of simple components right through to design and fabrication of complete projects.

The Australian Mining Review speaks with A.D. Coote & Co (Sheetmetal) Pty Ltd Managing Director Charles De Vos.

AMR: Charles, can you walk us through the key technical specifications and capabilities of the products or services A.D. Coote & Co is currently offering to the mining sector?

Charles De Vos: Certainly. At A.D. Coote & Co, we specialise in the design and manufacture of engineered metal infrastructure, with a strong focus on products tailored for mining, energy and heavy industrial environments. Our portfolio includes:

  • Steel Poles and Structures – Designed for high-load and high-voltage applications, including substation switch poles and overhead support structures. All our steel products are compliant with AS/NZS standards and engineered to suit harsh environmental conditions.
  • Custom Fabricated Steelwork – This includes access platforms, cable tray supports, equipment stands and switchroom foundations. Each solution is engineered specifically for site requirements and can be delivered fully assembled or flat-packed for ease of transport.
  • Aluminium Poles – These are a core offering. Manufactured in-house using proprietary tapering and extrusion methods, our poles are available in standard and custom heights up to 15 metres. They’re ideal for lighting, security cameras and signalling applications on mine sites.
  • Turnkey Delivery Model – We offer a full-service solution: concept design, shop detailing, fabrication, surface treatment, QA documentation and delivery. All services are performed at our ISO-certified facility in Perth, allowing us to maintain tight control over quality and lead times.

We’re also expanding into South Australia with a new branch based in Adelaide. This will enhance our ability to provide locally stocked products and responsive support for mining customers operating across the state.

AMR: How do these products and services benefit the mining industry, particularly in practical terms on site?

Charles De Vos: Mining is all about uptime, safety and long-term performance — and that’s exactly where our products deliver value.

For example, aluminium poles offer enormous benefits for remote mine sites. They’re corrosion-resistant, maintenance-free and lightweight, making them easier to transport, handle and install in locations where heavy lifting equipment is limited. Once installed, they require no ongoing treatment, which is a huge advantage in cost and safety.

In more complex applications, such as centre hinge poles and custom gantries, our ability to tailor structural designs ensures that the equipment is not only fit-for-purpose but also installation-ready. This is particularly important on sites with space constraints or unique foundation requirements.

Moreover, because our entire production process is managed under one roof, clients benefit from fast response times, consistent quality and full traceability — all of which are critical in regulated mining environments.

AMR: Let’s talk about operational efficiency and cost. How do your solutions contribute to reducing costs and improving outcomes for mining operations?

Charles De Vos: Cost control in mining is not just about the initial purchase price — it’s about total cost of ownership over the infrastructure’s life cycle.

Our aluminium poles are a great example. They require no painting or protective coatings and are naturally resistant to corrosion, even in high-salinity or cyclonic regions. That translates to zero maintenance, which significantly reduces labour costs and safety risks associated with working at height.

In terms of logistics, the lightweight design of aluminium poles reduces transport costs and makes manual handling on-site much easier. This also allows for faster installation, especially on remote projects with limited cranage or access equipment.

Additionally, our turnkey manufacturing model cuts out subcontractor delays. From the time we receive drawings to delivery of fully finished goods, we control every step. This compresses lead times, improves reliability and ultimately reduces the overall cost and complexity of project delivery.

We also help reduce cost through modular design principles — particularly for access platforms, enclosures and support structures — which means our components are quicker to assemble, require fewer fasteners and create less site waste.

AMR: Finally, could you give us an overview of A.D. Coote & Co — your history, values and how you see your role in the mining industry?

Charles De Vos: A.D. Coote & Co was founded in 1968, right here in Perth, WA. We’ve been family-owned since day one and continue to operate with the same values: integrity, quality and long-term relationships.

Our team of over 50 staff operates out of our Welshpool facility, which houses our full fabrication workshop, CNC processing and project management functions. We’re certified to ISO 9001 (quality), ISO 45001 (safety) and ISO 14001 (environment), which reflects our commitment to safe, compliant and sustainable manufacturing practices.

We take great pride in supporting local industry — sourcing materials from Australian suppliers wherever possible, training apprentices and contributing to the broader WA and now SA economies.

Our role in the mining sector is clear: to be a reliable, agile and solutions-focused manufacturing partner. We work with mine operators, contractors and service providers to deliver infrastructure that performs in the most demanding conditions. As the mining industry continues to expand and evolve — particularly in critical minerals and renewables — we’re investing in our own growth to meet those future demands.

With our upcoming Adelaide facility, a robust product range and a talented, customer-focused team, we’re confident that A.D. Coote & Co will continue to be a valued supplier to mining projects across Australia.
